I bought a plate in an antique shop, how can I tell if it's something worthwhile?

A friend told me that she thinks it's porcelain. It is white, smooth and unfinished, and thick (about 5 / 8''). There is no mark on the bottom. I paid $ 5.99 for it. I guess is an approximate value of what you paid for it. I was a Stained Glass mosaic on the outside of the bowl, but now I'm worried I'll damage something important. Any idea?
