what to do when my son’s classmate doesn’t like the birthday gift he gave her?
Last Sunday my son went to his classmate’s 10th birthday. she comes from a wealthy family and has everything. After talking to my son I got her a Nintendo DS game. Then I also wanted to give her something special and Unique. I had gotten this beautiful had made and handpainted clay mini jewelry box for myself from Mexico on our recent trip there. I included this in the gift bag wrapped in tissue paper. My intention was to give her something unsual in addition to the usual. I guess some how the box broken either when my son brought it in or when they were opening it. Next day she told my son that he gave her a “broken box”, “what’s up with that?”. Shall I pursue this further and sxplain my intentions? Did she mix the presents that all she remembers the box? Shall I go to her mother and tell her that it was not broken…? It is embarrassing to me if they are thinking that we gave her a “broken box”! Any ideas?
Common sense should tell them that you did not intend to give her a broken box. If she was raised to be polite, she would have smiled, thanked him for the box, and then possibly sent a thank you note later (depending on what region you’re in – common to some, uncommon to others). It’s not the responsibility of you or your son to make sure that she is happy with her gift. It is your son’s classmate’s problem if she chooses to be unhappy with it and then ask something as rude as “what’s up with that”.
