How can I get my 3 year old to have a bowl movement on the potty?
My 3 year old will pee on the potty but refuses to poop. He has gone so far as to just holding it for 2 weeks and making himself sick. We encourage him all we can….let him watch how we do it and he still won’t try. He wears big boys undies all day and a pull-up at night and that is when he will have his BM. Even bribery doesn’t work. Please HELP!
I had this problem with my son too. He used to cry and cry if he sat on the pot yet on occasion I would find some poop behind the sofa or in a corner somewhere. He would always show me when he had gone somewhere other than in the pot, so he knew doing it on the floor was wrong.
But we managed to sort it out in the end.
We did this by putting him in normal pants and watching out for signs that he wanted to move his bowels. He would get agitated because he wanted to go but he wasn’t wearing a diaper. At this point, I would put him on the pot in front of me. I would sit on a chair, the sofa or on the floor in front of him and hold his hands and reassure him that it was okay to go in the pot. Sometimes he would whimper but I would give him a hug and reassure him that it was okay and make lots of cooing, soothing noises. Occasionally he couldn’t help it – he would go in the pot but he would be upset while he was doing it because he said that his stomach was going to come out too (it turned out that this was what he was worried about all along). But whenever he went in the pot, he got cheers and applause and hugs and I reassured him that it wouldn’t. His stomach would be fine. Every day we would do this.
Occasionally, he became so distressed that eventually I would put a diaper on him just so that he could move his bowels. But after doing it, and when he had finished, I would explain to him that he was a big boy now and big boys don’t wear diapers. I would point out that daddy was once a little boy too, he didn’t wear diapers and he had to go on the pot. And so did I. He found the fact that we had both gone through it before him reassuring. After explaining this, I would ask him if he was willing to try again to use the pot the next day. He said yes he would try.
Eventually, being exposed to the pot became natural to him. And when he did go for a poop in it, he did it on his own! Of course, he got the usual round of praise and ringing applause (which always helps!). After that, there was no stopping him! The toilet was another challenge but we handelled it in the same way and he came through it.
Be patient, be prepared to go back to diapers occasionally but most of all, explain what is going on, reassure him that his stomach won’t fall out.
