Is it safe for cats to have mint?
I have recently taken in a stray cat who seems to have a ‘thing’ for mint – be it candy, gum, or just the smell. My question is, is it safe to let a cat have mint? If it IS safe, what would be the preferred state of consumption (candy, mint plant, etc.)?
I haven’t allowed her to have contact with it yet, beyond smelling, but it seems that she reacts to it much, much stronger than my other cats do.
Don’t give her any of those – cats shouldn’t eat candy or gum. But the reason she’s attracted to them is simple – catnip is also in the mint family. So how about getting her some catnip mice at a local pet store?
Have you had this stray checked out by a vet? Stray can often carry diseases and some of them can be DEADLY. Feline Leukemia, for one, is a deadly and incurable disease and can be transferred to other cats via the infected saliva. So if this cat’s sharing the same food bowls she may have already infected them. If you haven’t done so – get this cat checked out.
