Dutch Ovens Test Your Skills

For the Boy Scout, camper or trekker, the great outdoors is their world. They travel light, with their trusty and durable boots, and go to far-flung places by foot. They sleep in tents, with the sound of the forest or animals to keep them company. And cooking food is never a problem. A Dutch oven, matchsticks and charcoal or wood drift will do the trick.

Cooking for outdoor camping is both a skill and an art. It takes time to learn the tricks of cooking using a Dutch oven, and learning how to build a good fire and adjust it according to the type of cooking method or dish one desires. For people who are used to cooking with gas or using an oven or microwave, cooking in the outdoors may be a challenge for them. It may surprise them to know that for centuries, our ancestors have been using Dutch ovens for cooking most of their dishes. This is especially true among places where there is no electricity or available cooking gas.

A Dutch oven is a cooking Pot Made of cast iron. It comes in various sizes, but it is generally handy for carrying it around. One might think that only stews can be cooked in a Dutch oven, but for the avid camper, they can cook a variety of meals – from bread and biscuits, chicken, pork and veggies, to soup, stew and noodles. You can boil, roast, fry and steam food in it.

When cooking with coal, the general rule of thumb is multiplying the size of the diameter of your pot by two, in order to arrive at the number of coal pieces to use when cooking. For instance, most cooking pots are as large as12 inches in diameter, so the number of coal pieces you should use is 24. Arrange the coal around the perimeter of your pot – at the bottom and around the edges. This will allow heat from the fire to be equally distributed around your oven. You can adjust the heat by adding more coal, or by fanning the fire in order to increase the temperature. Thus, cooking with a Dutch oven challenges the best cooks around.
