What color of bedroom furniture should I get?

My room currently has cream carpet, a brushed nickel ceiling fan, one wall is a deep purple, and the other three are a little purple with white trim. My bedding includes a deep purple duvet with little purple sheets with aqua accent pillows. Aqua accent colors are around my room – lamps, vases, etc. Since I just repainted my room, I was thinking white picture frames on the walls too. I don’t have any bedroom furniture and need ideas. Should I get white, light brown, espresso, or black?? My room is only 15 by 14, so it’s not huge. Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks!

I would go with something with future decorating in mind. With that being said, I would not go with white furniture. Generally, white furniture is used for a cottage-y, beach-y, or shabby chic feel.

Funny I should say not to go with white, because I have white painted furniture! I had no intention whatsoever of buying white furniture, but mine was a floor sample model set and it was on sale at a big blow-out sale for so cheap I couldn’t pass it up. It’s good furniture – Broyhill – so that made the deal even sweeter.

My bedroom is beautiful. It’s done in Sage Green, soft white, and lavender and light purples. It has a cottage-y feel with a floral quilt, hat boxes, cream wicker chair, and so on. It’s gorgeous. Still, sometimes I wish I had darker furniture so I would not be limited as to the decor. I couldn’t go modern with the white – my furniture has accents that look like shutters (on the headboard and armoire doors).

I think white would limit your decorating choices, and I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to spend a lot on large pieces to fit your current decorating scheme. It will change. Your tastes will change, your color perferences will evolve, and one day you will decide you want a completely different look.

Buy something basic, simple, neutral, and versatile. Go for a classic style of furniture that will not go out of style because it’s trendy. Keep it simple. Black or the light wood would be my choice. Furniture is a big investment and should last for years. Don’t buy something you may grow tired of later. Just my opinion.

If I had it to do over, I would have purchased separate pieces instead of a matched set. I would have gone to antique stores and thrift stores and put together a knock-out room. Like I said, my bedroom is Very Pretty. I always get compliments and some say it “looks like a magazine picture.” But the white furniture limits my decor and my imagination.
