Why does the kitchen sponge stink?
I have used the Scotchbrite (yellow sponge on one side and the green scrubby on the other) brand sponges for years. They clean great but after a couple of weeks of use they start to stink and I can’t figure it out. I’ve tried everything I can think of from squeezing all the moisture out to using one of those drying platforms but when I wet it the next time it smells really bad.
The problem is that the sponge is still like new and not ready to be thrown out yet but I can’t use it because of the smell.
Any ideas or solutions?
It’s from an accumulation of bacteria that the sponge absorbs when you use it. Try microwaving it for a minute on high when it starts to smell.
