As a country, Turkey has the highest percentage of citizens who have green eyes, at 20 percent. There are a number of countries – generally located in Asia, South America, and the Middle East – where green eyes are almost completely absent among the population. ”
This number most likely includes hazel variations of green, which many people would consider brown primarily. Still, Turkey does have a lot of green-eyed people. Green eyes are often a result of a mixture of genetic types and Turks are definitely mixed, primarily as a result of the long reach of the Ottoman Empire. Sometimes, dominant brown and recessive blue don’t win the genetic battle so to speak. Instead they compromise with green. That adds to the number of green-eyed people. For those who have been in the east and west of Turkey and not seen many green-eyed people, try the north. =) Many Black Sea Turks are of mixed (or pure) Caucasian origin in addition to any other Ottoman influences. Green is not unusual there. Beautiful people with a variety of skin colors and gorgeous green eyes.
