Is it bad to leave my cats dish by Kitty litter box?

My roommate leaves her kittens new dishes next to the toilet and the right of the litter box in the bathroom. Garbage is thrown into the food all the time and I'm worried. Is it unpleasant and unhealthy for a cat or am I just paranoid?

You are not paranoid. What's roommate is doing is really unpleasant. Tell your roommate you is like having that table right next your toilet. It's basically the same difference. For the cat to stay healthy, food should be placed in another room, away from the litter box. In my house I a sandbox in 2 bedrooms and a plate of food and water dish in the kitchen. I've always done this. Incidentally, my cat is 18 years old and very healthy for his age.
