How easy is it to become a citizen of Germany?

Here in the U.S. is almost impossible unless you have a crapload money or marry an American. Germans out there – Is it easy to go to Germany and become citizens (not married to a German), or at least one card permanent resident who can work and live there? Follow-up: Let's assume that it is very hard to get the actual documents and permits to live in Germany more beyond the three-month mark. (I guess that is three months in most countries.) If I only lived there illegally, how easy it is to get work and support myself, without official papers and junk? Does not national identity? Would it be impossible to find a legitimate job that does not pay you under the table and etc? Thanks.

Naturalization as a German citizen may acquire German citizenship by naturalization for those with permanent residence who have lived in Germany for 8 years. Additional requirements include an adequate command of the German language and the ability to be self-sufficient without recourse to assistance social. Applicants for naturalization are normally expected to demonstrate that they have given up their current citizenship, or will lose this automatically for naturalization. An exception applies to those who can not renounce their citizenship easily (as refugees). Another exception applies to citizens of European member states Union that do not require Germans to renounce citizenship upon naturalization in that country. Exceptions to the normal residence requirements include: spouse of a German citizen may be naturalized after 3 years of residence in Germany. The marriage must have persisted for at least 2 years. People who have completed a integration course may have a residence requirement reduced to 7 years, the refugees and stateless persons may be able to apply after the former six years of residence German citizens
