Can someone give me insight on the BMW MINI? Is the car hype or is it the real mccoy?
Are they built well, will they last many years and take high mileage. Does anyone have a high mileage Mini, any issues? Would you recommend the car for a teen, the one with 6 airbags. What do you think?
The mini is a niche car. It is cool looking, and fun to drive. However, it’s somewhat expensive for it’s size and there’s not much room in the back for passengers. One of my college buddies just traded in her 2004 Cooper S for a 2007. She said that the car didn’t age very well but being 4’10″, she couldn’t think of a better fitting car. Her 2004 had close to 78,000 freeway miles and she had a few electrical issues early on. By the time she traded it in, the valve cover gaskets had started leaking and many of the controls were badly worn. A lot of the Mini’s interior controls aren’t what you would call “high quality.” I can’t say that all Minis leak oil at higher mileage but electrical problems (major or minor), are not unheard of. I know that she is the type of person who shifts around 3,000 rpms so it’s not like she beat up the car. I’ve been told many good things about them and I like the feel of them from the few times that I drove my friend’s S. However, I wouldn’t recommend any MIni for a teen. While teens may like the looks, the insurance will be high on either model. If you have the money to burn for a teen, buy a 3 series. Normally I would say Honda or Toyota for a teen because they are better cars and hold up better- which is important because teens usually have no idea how to maintain an automobile correctly and they are pretty safe in accidents. NHTSA and IHHS may not rate them as the highest in safety, but I’ve seen my fair share of these cars after they were involved in real world accidents. Even when they’re totalled, more likely than not the occupants walked away. Anyway, if you look at all of the factors in Mini ownership, it really is more of an adult vehicle contrary to it’s size. I hope this helps.
