What do you recommend to make my my small studio look sleek, urban chic, modern, and industrial?
Lengthy answers and multiple, detailed suggestions and examples are most welcome!
Well for the sake of argument lets just say that you don’t have to worry about how much anything costs. Also for an example I’ll used an office and you can take examples from there. For this office I’ll also assume that the desk is in line with the door but on the opposite wall.
First, the walls, I would suggest a bold red it has an ambitious air which is good for the work place and in Chinese color theory it is usually used for prosperity.
To make the office look larger you should buy large mirrors, if possible avoid frames. Place these to reflect light from windows or if windowless then across the room from each other on the side walls (not facing the desk or door).
I would keep the ceiling a bright clean white to keep the room from being too suffocating. The floor, if carpet, should also be a white or Off White if you’re trying to avoid the dirt issue. If the floor is tile again I’d say white, possibly with some strategically placed black tiles to create a geometric pattern on the floor. If the floor is hard wood then a rug in a black and white geometric pattern.
For a sleek desk go for something in chrome and black. Most of these have the open front under the desk. If you’re someone who doesn’t want people to see your legs or additional drawers you might want to slide under the desk then buy another mirror, again without a frame and have it mounted on the front. If you want another mirror on the top you can have that mounted too. If you have one on the top of the desk then a thin Plexiglas layer over it will help it not get ruined. Instead of a mirrored top you could also try a black colored top, whether the black is plastic or lacquered it will be easier to find chairs that match black instead of mirror.
There should be at least 2 chairs in front of your desk for meeting with anyone. Even if you don’t plan on meeting with people get at least 1 chair for the off chance that you would. Some thing of a chrome frame with a black butt cushion would be good. You don’t want them feeling too comfortable since the office is your “home field” and a stiff backed chair will help you determine their confidence or professional level.
Your chair should be more comfortable. Possibly a bigger version of their chair where the frame includes chrome arms, and in addition to the butt cushion you should have a back one and cushion pieces on the arms from about the elbow to the wrist.
Keep anything on the desk matching. If you have something in wood make sure the wood all matches. I would recommend a dark wood if you want to go that route. Other than that keep any personal items to a few pictures if you wish (again the frame should match and if there is an area on the desk where people in front of the desk can’t see the back of the frame that would be best). Last any small statues or art should be tasteful and match the overall room. If you don’t have a ceiling lamp then 2 floor lamps with a frosted bowl shade, they should be placed behind your desk and to either side.
If your desk is not placed with your back to a window then here is a perfect place for a piece of art, and since it is in close proximity to the desk if you don’t want a silver or black fame you could match a decorative wooden frame to the wood on your desk. Make sure that the art you choose is something that matches and that you like.
If you can’t find something in chrome just spray paint it metallic silver so it looks shiny and make sure that the item is rounded, like a tube instead of a rectangle. Give it plenty of time to dry before you try to move it so you don’t get fingerprints in the paint.
Don’t put anything in the room that you’re not comfortable with. If you wouldn’t like the red in the room try a nice blue, something bright but still regal looking. Blue is a calmer color and some people can’t stand a bright red room (honestly I couldn’t either) but the red should help you stay energized and focused during work.
Good Luck with your decorating.
