A Little Color Adds New Life to Home Décor
Keeping color schemes neutral has always been an easy way to decorate. (Maybe it’s also a way to avoid domestic arguments!) Problem is, having all beige or white walls, furnishings and accessories gets boring fast. Neutral may be functional, but it’s dull.
Color revitalizes décor.
Try to use items already in your home. If you’ve got children, you’ve probably got some of their artwork. Take their cue. Use your child’s artwork by adding a thin black frame and a clean white mat. This minimalist look is the perfect setting for highlighting color and art. You can also display multi-colored baskets in the kitchen or show off Fine China.
Brightly colored paint can banish the doldrums from any room. Try adding orange color block to spice up a previously neutral living room. Or, a favorite trick of interior designers is to leave a strip of the original wall color to soften the addition of a bold new color. The strip acts as a frame and enhance the effect.
Many other painting techniques are just as easy to use. For example, sponge painting is a simple way to create a soft, mottled pattern, like clouds. First, a base coat is applied, then allowed to dry. Next, use a sponge dipped in glaze to dab the paint and create a spotted pattern. Ragging, marbling, dragging and combing are other painting techniques to consider. Or try painting just one wall in a vibrant color to give the room a focal point.
Accessories add interest.
Other interesting ways to add color include vases, flowers, drawer pulls, quilts, ceramics, lampshades, pillows and paintings. Abstract art is often filled with bright colors and striking shapes. Add a cornucopia of natural color with an ordinary bowl of fruit. Better yet, a crystal Cake Stand makes a stunning display for lemons, apples, or oranges.
Area rugs are another ideal way to add color and divide a large room into two distinct areas. When complimentary colors are incorporated into the design of a rug, it can unite the color scheme of the room. Persian or Oriental rugs feature vibrant patterns that add focus and energy to your room’s décor. Area rugs also provide soft texture and comfort while protecting hardwood floors.
Dress up your windows.
Another economical yet effective way to add color is through window furnishings. Any design scheme can be accommodated through careful selection of patterns and fabric. As an example, there are many curtain styles to consider, including the valance, shirred curtains, tie-back curtains and café curtains. Window furnishings offer the dual advantage of adding both color and texture to a room. For instance, tie-back curtains can be dramatically draped to one side, with the rope and tassel creating added interest.
Add color to your home décor is really quite simple. All it takes is a little paint, a few accessories, a couple area rugs and some window furnishings for an inexpensive home makeover. Not only does color change the mood of a room, it adds allure and interest as well.
