Question for Banks Employees?

My new wife (congrats, I know, thank you), has not yet changed her name to match mine. We won’t do so probably until after we return from our honeymoon.

What you need to do is bring your marriage certificate and to your bank along with all of the checks you are depositing. Are you sharing an account? Does your wife bank at the same Bank? If not, you can easily add her to your account with two government issued ID’s (drivers license, military ID- any government issued ID that has a picture on it.) I know her driver’s license will have her maiden name and that is ok.

Now, don’t sign the checks until you are at the bank doing all of these transactions for a couple of reasons… If the check gets lost or stolen, or if your bank wants you to do them a certain way.

When I was a personal Banker I had my customers (I just recently had to do this a year ago when I got married too) sign the check accordingly. If the check is made out to mr and mrs. ———- then you will sign your name and then your wife will most likely sign her maiden name and then again as mrs., so there will be 3 signatures on the check.

You don’t have to feel like you are doing anything wrong, this is a concern for many people all the time and it just sounds more difficult than it really is… just make sure that you and your wife have a little bit of time to sit at the bank and take care of everything.

Again, just bring your marriage certificate and any proof you have of marriage with proper ID’s. And of course- CONGRATULATIONS!!!

PS- Also, just a heads up… let your wife know that when she is ready to get everything changed to go to the DMV first with her marriage certificate to change the name on her license. Secondly, after she has her license with her married name on it, then she can go to the social security office to get her name changed on her social security card… just thought i would tell you because sometimes it is confusing where to go first
