Vintage Mccoy planters, how to clean?

I recently bought some very nice vintage Mccoy Planter pottery. They were definitely used by many years. Does anyone know of a way to get hard water and salt deposits of the dishes that are attached to the pot? I have tried soaking in white vinegar, but even make a dent. Any suggestions would be great. I would use these again, but I make sure my plants stay healthy.

If I am lucky to have a planter McCoy certainly not use it for plants. It would be too valuable to risk anything happening to her. I would put on a shelf and love for years. If you insist on usage, hard water deposits will not harm the plants.
