Shopping in Singapore, an experience like no other
Singapore today is a cosmopolitan city, with people of Chinese, Malay and Indian ethnicities and many foreign residents. A ‘melting pot’ truly exists in modern Singapore with much intermingling and sharing of the various traditions of the resident peoples. Singapore is now one of the most affluent nations in the world, with a thriving market economy based largely on manufacturing, construction and services. It is also a major tourist destination with its well-known shopping opportunities, a vibrant nightlife and unique cuisine.
Orchard Road is Singapore’s most famed shopping district, an area that every visitor will wish to explore. It is lined on both sides by international and local department stores, offices, small boutiques, hotels, restaurants and cafes. Almost any kind of product is available at Orchard Road, making it a fascinating excursion. The Centrepoint is one of the largest and busiest Singapore shopping centres, offering casual clothing, classical music, electronics, optical equipment, sporting equipment, antiques and much more; it also contains the Robinsons & Co. and Marks and Spencers department stores.
The DFS Galleria Scottswalk features duty-free prices on international luxury brands and a huge collection of cosmetics and fashion. The Far East Plaza is a trendy mall selling the latest street wear, eyewear, CDs and even precious gems. Meanwhile Tanglin Shopping Centre stocks Eastern carpets, curios and antiques, art, jewellery, silk and includes a multitude of tailors and healthcare practitioners.
Singapore’s Chinatown offers shopping of a different flavour, with its street stalls touting clothes, foodstuffs, plants, pottery and household items, particularly during the Lunar New Year in addition to the usual knick-knacks, trinkets, t-shirts, paintings, home decorations, Chinese silk and CDs. Not to be missed are the Chinatown Complex, Chinatown Point and Yue Hwa Emporium, offering an array of Chinese and international goods and food products.
Clarke Quay and Riverside shopping is another enjoyable shopping experience, with Riverside Point featuring fashion and jewellery retailers. Meanwhile Central, a classy modern building houses over 280 stores vending mainly fashion merchandise, food and beverages.
Another unique shopping experience is Little India, the ethnic Indian enclave where the items on offer include saris, spices, jewellery, flower garlands, silver and brassware and typical Indian snacks.
Other shopping highlights in Singapore include Marina Bay, the Harbourfront Precinct, Geylang Serai, Kampong Glam and Holland Village.
When selecting a hotel in Singapore, an ideal choice would be the Copthorne Orchid Hotel Singapore. Located in proximity to Orchard road and the city centre, the hotel offers luxurious rooms, recreational facilities, exceptional dining and attentive service making it perfect for the leisure or business traveller.
