Will there never again be true Corningware “French White” cookware, made from genuine Corningware material?
Corningware “French White” cookware used to be made of the famous Corningware material, which goes from freezer to oven. However Corningware French White on sale today is now stoneware, not Corningware. The crisp fluted vertical pattern now looks somewhat rounded at the edges, and the color is no longer the bright white Corningware color, but rather a Pottery White color. Instead of being made from actual Corningware material, the cookware is just Glazed Pottery.
Unfortunately, the Corning Glass Co. was sold and the products are now stoneware as opposed to the Pyroceram we all knew and loved. You’re right… the new stuff is cr*p.
What you can do is check out ebay. That’s what I did as soon as I found out. At that time, anyway, I was still able to purchase a few large pieces, just in case I break one of mine.
If you do go the ebay route make sure you ask these questions as it is the only way to be sure you’re getting Pyroceram. The sellers won’t have a clue if you even use that word.
1. Does the box or casserole say “broiler safe?” Only the Pyroceram is broiler safe. The new stuff isn’t. The old stuff is also safe on the stovetop but the boxes generally said, “Freezer, Microwave, Oven and Broiler safe.”
2. When you look at the bottom is the entire surface smooth or is there a ring that is raw without glaze? Pyroceram was completely glazed on the bottom.
I just did an ebay search for Pyroceram Corning and did find a couple of smaller square traditional blue patterned pieces. I wish you luck. I was pretty unhappy when I first learned the news, too.
For people reading this… Yes, it’s still freezer to oven safe but isn’t as durable as the Pyroceram, which didn’t get little silver marks all over it from metal utensils. The older material was also far more detailed and attractive.
I truly believe that with a little work you can find what you’re looking for on ebay, including trivets, etc. since the French White was the most popular at the time of the sale. It’s a real shame that one of the finest kitchen products ever made is no longer available.
