Making the Move to California

You may have a lot to learn if your impressions of California are based on what you have seen on TV. This state is huge and in possession of tremendous variety. For example, take a look at Crescent City to the northwest and then look at Barstow to the southeast. Average July temperatures of 65 degrees and annual rainfall of close to 70 inches are found on the coastal town of Crescent City. The city of Barstow is mostly desert and receives less than five inches of rainfall a year. Its median temperature in summer is at least 102. You can find everything in between in the rest of the state. In California, we have a climate for everyone.

Hang onto your snow gear when you relocate to California. The mountain ranges up and down the state provide a multitude of winter activities. Being only a 2 hour drive from the mountains or the beach is one of the best things about living near Sacramento.

You might want to ditch most of your basement belongings since not many homes in California are equipped with one. Most California homes are built on slab foundations. Basements are generally only seen in houses constructed on a hill in which the slope makes it simple to add this room into the foundation. A number of self-storage units are available to stow your valuables that you just have to keep.

You probably won’t need your ride-on mower as the lawns are tiny and you can easily use an electric mower. Drought resistant landscaping is encouraged because of the water shortage.

In California, a good fence makes a good neighbor. Most people around here have six foot redwood fences. Children and pets have a safe place to play and backyard barbecues are common since yards are fenced in. Of course, people who take pride in their house and garden are happy not to have to look at their neighbor’s unsightly property. When I visited my relatives in Pennsylvania, I was amazed at the huge yards with no fences. I was curious where their dogs were kept while they worked. Do you want to see your neighbor’s lawn furniture or pool? No matter what the size, it is nice to have a private yard.

California does have earthquakes. There is a government run website that shows you all of the earthquakes in California in real time. There are a lot of small daily earthquakes, they rarely make the news. Mobile home parks are not a target, as they are with tornadoes. An earthquake should not cause you grief or fear, but it always pays to be prepared for an emergency.

Last but not least, you must enjoy California’s many fine restaurants. A wide variety of restaurants attest to the fact that California is culturally diverse. Pack up your bags, and come on out to California. We have tons of room for you!
