How can I make a serving platter as a gift basket?

Im making a gift basket for Mother's Day and I could not find a basket so I bought a plate of snacks. It is a plain white plastic container. The border around the top sticks out and there are green belts around the lid. How can I decorate to look pretty with things I have at home?
