Table Lamp
I want to make a mold of my desk lamp with plaster molding. How?

The lamp is beautiful I want to duplicate making a plaster mold and then more of the same, but with special touches and additions. I hope to make the plaster mold casting then use slip, or some other means to broadcast. Before firing desire to cut the numbers a little to the profile. Or is there another medium that is carveable and possibly in an oven at home? I really want to make the lamp as unbreakable as possible. Thanks for any and all input.

how much experience you have in this type of project? And how complex it is the lamp? What is made of? You can only use casts if no withholding deductions will lock the mold and plaster (eg http://www.danperezstudios.com/images/workshop/molding_casting/undercut.gif). The sturdy material is possible only occurs to me is using a resin. But then you either need to place the power cord while using the resin or to a core to ensure that the lamp is hollow. For Resin I will not use a plaster cast as it is very porous (which could use shellac to seal, but I'm not sure how working with resin). Resin definitely works with a silicone rubber mold, the flexibility that also allows some deductions. But I am familiar with silicon releases acetic acid, while it sets, so if the lamp is made of metal that can discolor the metal (if water is used in gypsum plaster may be oxidized). Take a class in mold making, if you really want to do this project. Otherwise, have at least to send an image of the object to cast. Improved procedures in the manufacture of molds depend largely on the size, shape and detail of the object.
