Winter clothing for dogs?
Well, I live in Minnesota and it’s absolutely FRIGID here right now. I have two dogs; a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a Boxer, neither can handle the cold weather for very long. This is a problem because they’re both very energetic and love their daily walks, but right now it’s impossible for them to be out there for more than 10 minutes MAX. I do have a coat and boots for them, but they suck and it’s the second pair of boots I’ve gone through for BOTH of them just this winter. I can’t find good, quality boots anywhere. Any suggestions? I’d really like some that go high up on the legs, with straps, rather than the ones that just cover the foot. If there are truly none out there, I was considering trying to make some. Has anyone done this? If so, how’d you do it?
Contact some husky groups, specifically the groups that train their dogs to pull dog sleds or do skijooring. They’ll know the right boots that will work with hard use on a dog’s foot. You can find them by googling.
As for doggie coats, look for ones that are made well, cover most of the dog and include a fleece against the fur of the dog. Those retain body heat so much better. Going ‘cheap’ won’t get you the good ones, and usually boutiques don’t stock the right type. There’s probably local sewers who make up things like this, stop at any fabric shop and go to the cutting table and ask there if they know of anyone local.
