How Florists Can Improve Sales In a Bad Economy

In 2008 floral retail outlet sales reached $20.9 billion according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. With more than 20,000 floral retail shops competing for a slice of this market, the average estimated floral retail shop sales averaged roughly $325,000.

If you’re considering a plan to venture into the online florists space or are already there, then paying attention to what market leaders are doing can provide insight and direction for improving sales and raising brand awareness. This is not to suggest mimicking the steps of the floral power players but competing requires not just being in the same ball park but also having a turn at bat.

Leading international providers of floral services like FTD, ProFlowers, Teleflora, and 1-800-flowers for starters, dominate the industry with annual sales eclipsing several hundred million dollars annually. These large floral service companies owe their sales advantages to not only their networks of flower growers and local floral shop retailers, but also to their international reach and online exposure.

With vast networks, global reach, and online dominance, new floral retailers emerging in this space would have a tough time competing without having brand prowess and a sizable marketing budget. Though building brand recognition takes time, especially online, with the popularity of social media today, brand recognition and market penetration can be achieved with an effective communication campaign.

With the recent decline in the economy, the tightening of credit, decreasing home values and the lack of consumer confidence, traditional marketing techniques are becoming less prudent and less financially rewarding as consumers continue to tighten their belts.  Brands, small and large, are turning to online social media to find and communicate with potential customers.

Looking at recent reports from Internet Retailer, Proflowers.com had the highest conversion rate among all internet retailers in May, with a conversion rate of 38.6%. The average conversion rate for all verticals is around 2.3% according to Bryan Eisenberg, of ClickZ.com. Getting close to the ProFlowers.com conversion numbers will boost sales for online florists if they are paying attention.

Conversions are simply your ability to turn visitors to your online florist site into buying customers.  How you attract visitors to your site is a critical another step in increasing conversions.  Here are some points to examine:

In my research and experience as a publisher of online floral services, Proflowers.com does something that a lot of flower shops online fail to do to increase conversions.

Incentivize the customer – ProFlowers’ provide a strong incentive to click through the site by offering not just flowers but flowers with a free vase and sometimes other free items such as chocolates.

Value Introduction – Other than FTD.com, ProFlowers is the only flower shop that offer flowers starting at $19.99. This price point attracts users who are looking to spend less and get more.

Visuals - If you look closely at ProFlowers’ product list every picture has a bouquet that fills the entire image and the bouquets usually look very full almost like they are bursting through the image. This is very visually enticing, yet ironically, ProFlowers ships its orders in a box for consumers to arrange themselves.

Online Experience – ProFlowers product pages has a 3 step process. You get the feeling that the ordering process will not be cumbersome, but quick and easy.

Online florists should be ready to analyze these factors and compare against their own online retail shops. Having a nicely designed site with a nice picture of a bouquet is not enough.  What’s the value proposition? What am I getting by going further? Those questions should be answered up front with the right sales copy followed by the fulfillment process.  In addition to improving conversions, developing a social media strategy as well will help lift your brand out of the shadows.

I have a Moving Sale …. their ideas on prices?

I lost my job a couple of months ago and due to financial difficulties I'm selling everything I have. I need to find ideas on what would be a reasonable price for some of these elements: 1. 52 "Toshiba HDTV-2 years, excellent condition paid $ 2000 for the brand new 2. Kenmore Washer and Dryer – 8 years – still in good shape … XL 3 capacity. Different appliances: blender / coffee / toaster / microwave / pot mud … still in Good Condition, some items are rarely used 4. Lot of framed pictures, some large pieces and about 6 small. Plates (8 pcs. Configuration, some missing elements due to breakage) of silver, and sets Corningware Pyrex baking pans, pots, pans 7. Holiday Decorations decorations, some items made Hand 8. Several pieces of lead crystal … vases, candlesticks, frames, serving dishes … Very Good condition 9. Also selling all my 100 pc. Barbie Collection. I that group items in a box and sold ppoint price. Any idea on prices or advice would be helpful, thanks!

I suggest you check out eBay auctions as a form of big ticket items – especially collectors – if not directly sell some of its articles. You can check out the bids and prices, even if not a member, get live help, to steer you in the right direction if you lose, and if you are a member, you can search completed items and see what ended up selling for. Moreover, the price of things slightly more than you're willing to take – this gives a space of negotiation and helps lower a bit, which make people feel that he spoke at a price they were willing to take anyway. Price things in simple numbers – whole dollar amounts where possible, or five or ten figures ($ 25 instead of $ 26, etc.) and even through nickels or dimes (in other words, there are 99 per percent or table that will have to take a lot of coins throughout the day). Making it easier on yourself as far as making the change – also helps people when they are shopping to find out how much they can spend.
