How could I convert an old tractor tyre into a patio planter?
I have an old tractor tyre that is 4 foot wide by 1 foot deep, which I would like to grow vegetables in, in particular potatoes.
What I would like to know is what can I use to line the bottom of the tyre that would be suitable, if any one could suggest or recommend something please.
I should also mention that the tyre will be kept on a paved patio, against a west facing wall.
Oh and I HAVE tried Google, but I get confusing results
Chemical shouldn’t be a problem, I’ve had it for 5 years and its been sat outside all that time (It was part of a climbing frame for the kids)
I’ve read and heard that you can use cardboard and/or polystyrene to line line pots with – would this work? I’m asking because I’ve just got a new washing machine and I haven’t recycled them yet.
I grew potato’s in my tyre one year and they where great! I filled the space with straw then the remaining cavity with a soil/ rotted manure mix…some of the best potato’s we had ever grown. I don’t know about chemicals leeching out but we scrubbed it First and the soil wasn’t in contact with the tyre wall (hence the straw)…but people grow food in plastic pots and grow bags so I don’t see the problem =D
