I’m in the oil finish camp for that piece, too. Either boiled linseed or tung oil will work wonderfully. Plan to work on it – hand rub a coat on, let it dry, and keep applying coats until the wood won’t absorb any more. With the tight grain of walnut, it won’t take more than two coats, I’ll bet.

After it is good and dry, buff it with a terrycloth rag. I wish there was a way to post pictures here. I’d love to see the piece.
